AMS Radiocarbon (¹⁴C) Dating
Radiocarbon measurements are performed on carbon-containing samples to determine their radiocarbon ages based on the radioactive decay of carbon-14.
Sample types: Materials containing organic carbon, such as charcoal, peat, plant material, hair, textiles, hemp, and paint; materials containing inorganic carbon, such as stalagmites, corals, tufa deposits, and biological shells; and groundwater.
Graphite Target Preparation System (Room 230, Geosciences Building)
This system processes and purifies organic and inorganic carbon samples. The purified CO₂ is then converted into graphite using the zinc reduction method. Up to six samples can be processed simultaneously. A minimum of 0.2 mg of carbon is required per sample.
Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (Room 131, Geosciences Building)
The accelerator mass spectrometer was manufactured by HVE in the Netherlands (HVEE 1.0 MV Tandetron, Model 4110 BO — Accelerator Mass Spectrometer). It is currently the only instrument of its kind in Taiwan and is used for radiocarbon dating.
